With rapid economic development, population growth and urbanization, Rwanda faces a great challenge to meet its increasing energy demand. Currently, Rwanda’s energy supply is dominated by hydropower and thermal energy, while the supply of oil, natural gas and renewable energies is relatively short.

Development project of the Nuclear Power Plant based on Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology is a unique solution that can simultaneously solve two issues: the development of dispatchable generation in the country from the one hand, and the creation of low-carbon generation, on the other hand in line with Vision 2050.

Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are a new wave of nuclear reactor technology designed to be smaller, safer, and more flexible than traditional large-scale reactors. They present several benefits such as:

  • Modular design;
  • Optimization of construction time;
  • Co-location;
  • Cogeneration capability;
  • Increased load following capability (maneuverability);
  • Passive safety;
  • Trend towards design simplification;
  • Trends in licensing and regulation.
